"She's terrible; the kid made it sound like she had more experience." I walked into this agent's office in Calgary, where I sold him a story and secured an audition with a well-known band.
"No, we're going to keep her; we're going on the road," . A trio of veteran musicians, all in their mid-twenties, showed up at my mom's house at 7 AM on a Sunday in a cube van. I was going on tour first stop Estevan, Saskatchewan, in January. I give credit to those men; they never took their eyes off me. There was no chance for me to party in those early days. I was made to listen to mono board tapes, which was the most depressing musical experience I’ve ever had. Determined to turn me into a singer, they nurtured the entertainer, which was the easy part. Musically I was clueless, but whenever I got lost, I could freestyle my way through a song like a pro; that gave them hope that the rest would come together—timing, for starters. Every time I step on stage, I remember and I am grateful for the musicians who took a chance on a tiny rock singer in the making. We toured for 36 weeks straight and had just finished a successful week in Lethbridge, that night, I broke hearts. It was time for me to run my own crew.
